Adjusting the carburetor is all about the air/fuel ratio. If it is too rich, the engine often runs a bit sluggish, smokes more and the spark plug can become wet. If you go too lean, things will get (too) hot and may start to hold back. With a 2-stroke this is an extra link, because getting stuck quickly approaches. In this article we will practically go through the adjustment for 2-stroke and 4-stroke and you will also see how you can tell whether you are rich or poor.
What exactly does a carburetor do?
The carburetorr mixes air with gasoline and doses it per gas setting. Roughly speaking, these parts determine how your engine behaves:

Idle circuit, for running without throttle and first pick-up.

Needle and needle jet, especially the midrange (half throttle).

Main jet, especially at full throttle and higher revs.
With 2-strokes, (part of) the lubrication comes from the fuel mix or from an oil pump, so setting it too lean is asking for problems. With 4-strokes you often see that 'adjustment' makes little difference: then you are more likely to look at valve clearance, compression or ignition.
Before you start: preparation and basic checks
Only start adjusting once the basics are correct. Otherwise you are making adjustments while the real cause remains.

Work safely: outside or well ventilated, no open flames. Gasoline (vapours) are so flammable.

Adjusting the carburetor on a 2-stroke: step-by-step plan
With 2-stroke you mainly want to be safe: preferably not too lean, but an engine that picks up sharply. Work slowly, in small steps, and change one thing at a time.

Basic setting: write down the current nozzle sizes and needle clip position. Set the air/mixture screw to the starting value from the manual. No data? Then you often end up with around 1.5–2 turns open, but the factory value remains the best guideline.

Idle and pick-up: first adjust the idle speed roughly with the idle screw. Then turn the mixture/air screw in small steps until it reaches the nicest (and usually highest) idle. Then return the idle to normal.

Part-throttle behavior: if it bucks when driving slowly or there is a 'hole' in the middle area, then you look at the needle. Too rich can often be solved by lowering the needle (clip one step up). Too lean: needle higher (clip down).

Full throttle control: if it does not pull through at full throttle or if it holds back, it may be too lean or there is simply not enough fuel coming through (supply/flow). If he sputters and doesn't want to go all out, then you're usually too rich. Adjust the main jet in small steps.

Read the spark plug after a test drive: drive for a while at the throttle setting you are testing and then look at the spark plug. Black and wet is often too rich (or an inflammatory issue). Light gray/white can mean too poor. Coffee to light brown is often nice, but also pay attention to the temperature and how it drives.
Adjusting the carburetor on a 4-stroke: step-by-step plan
With 4-strokes the benefit is usually in a stable idle and a clean transition as soon as you accelerate.

Basic setting: set the mixture screw to the factory value. Unknown? 2–2.5 turns open is a common start. Adjust the idle screw so that it just keeps running.

Fine adjustment of idle speed: gently turn the mixture screw in/out until you have the highest and most stable idle speed. Then use the idle screw to set the speed back to the correct value.

Throttle response test: accelerate briefly. If it almost fails or falters, the transition circuit is often too lean or there is false air. If it pops darkly and you smell a lot of gasoline, then you are more likely to be on the rich side.

If adjustment has little effect: check valve clearance, compression, false air at the manifold/carburettor and the ignition. If that's not right, you keep going in circles.

Often yes. More air or different back pressure changes what the engine needs. If necessary, start a little richer and then work back step by step until it runs smoothly.
Can I adjust a carburetor without experience?
Yes, if you work quietly, write everything down and test after each step. And when in doubt (especially with 2-stroke): stop, and rather go one jet size larger than too small.
When do I choose an overhaul set or jet set?
If it continues to run erratically, the float is leaking, gaskets are hardened or nozzles appear to be dirty. A jet set is especially useful if you tinker with your setup and then want to fine-tune it.
